Ancient Healing Techniques: Amber's Journey to Acupuncture and Herbs (2025)

Feeling run down and seeking a natural path to wellness? Amber Pickering, the driving force behind South Coast Acupuncture and Herbs, has dedicated her life to the ancient healing practices of acupuncture and Chinese herbs, and her journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Amber's story began in her early twenties when she first encountered the transformative power of these traditional methods. This sparked a lifelong quest for knowledge and healing. Initially immersed in the fast-paced world of corporate events, Amber later returned to university in her early thirties, earning a Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This led her to establish her own clinic in Kiama in 2020.

"That [the clinic] was doing really well and I loved it, but like all small businesses hit the slow with COVID," Amber shares, reflecting on the challenges faced by many during the pandemic.

During this time, Amber expanded her expertise by commuting to Sydney, where she took on a role at an Acupuncture Pregnancy and Fertility clinic. There, she gained invaluable insights into fertility and pregnancy acupuncture under the guidance of a scientist-turned-Chinese medicine practitioner. This clinic, with 16 years of experience, initially focused on supporting IVF treatments.

"Optimizing egg quality and also supporting implantation after and during the IVF cycle," Amber explains.

Now, they offer comprehensive protocols for both men and women hoping to conceive naturally, as well as for pregnant women seeking relief from common discomforts such as nausea, fatigue, high blood pressure, heartburn, and back pain.

But here's where it gets controversial... Research published earlier this year by the University of Melbourne suggests that acupuncture may enhance blood flow to reproductive organs, including the uterine lining (endometrium) and the ovaries.

Amber emphasizes the importance of stress reduction, stating, "A major thing is to reduce stress because these are people who want to be parents and the whole process of IVF or trying to conceive after many attempts becomes very stressful." She highlights the significance of preparing both the mind and body for the journey ahead.

Recently, Amber has joyfully re-opened her clinic in Kiama Downs, welcoming back familiar faces and eager to meet new clients.

"I have gained a lot of experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, fertility and pregnancy acupuncture, general wellbeing and from my own personal experience, stress and anxiety," Amber adds, showcasing the breadth of her expertise.

And this is the part most people miss... Amber's clinic accepts all health funds, offering rebates to make these treatments more accessible. For some health funds, the extras reset at the end of the year, making it an opportune time to prioritize your health.

As the year winds down, many find themselves battling fatigue and searching for ways to rejuvenate. South Coast Acupuncture and Herbs is poised to provide the experience and care needed.

"It’s a good time to reset for the new year," Amber suggests. "This time of year is quite a busy and stressful time of year so acupuncture and cupping is very good for removing toxins from the body. It also promotes blood and Qi circulation to the whole body."
