Are you overpaying for a lab-grown diamond? The market for lab-grown diamonds is booming, with engaged couples increasingly opting for these stones over mined or "natural" diamonds. But is this trend all it's cracked up to be? When Daniel Ng and Olivia Chan from Toronto were shopping for an engagement ring in 2024, they decided to go with a lab-grown diamond due to its significantly lower price compared to a natural stone. Experts claim that lab-grown diamonds can cost up to 90% less than their natural counterparts. However, a Marketplace investigation revealed that virtually identical lab-grown diamonds are being sold at vastly different prices, raising concerns about whether some consumers are paying more than they should. The journalists bought two lab-grown diamonds, one from Blue Nile and the other from Alibaba.com, both with the same features: one carat, D-colour, ideal cut, VS1 clarity, and round shape. The Blue Nile diamond cost $1,639.23, while the Alibaba diamond cost $228.86. This significant price difference sparked questions about the consistency of pricing in the lab-grown diamond market. Paul Zimnisky, a diamond industry analyst, explained that the price gap could be due to jewellers' incentives to sell lab-grown diamonds, as they offer higher profit margins. He also noted that the price difference doesn't change the fact that the seller likely bought the lab-grown diamond at a lower wholesale price. Despite the price discrepancies, both diamonds were verified as legitimate by the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and were found to be of equivalent quality by accredited jewelry appraisers, Eddy and Allan Young. However, the industry's response to the pricing inconsistencies has been mixed. The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) declined to comment on pricing decisions, citing the difficulty of setting uniform guidelines. Meanwhile, Blue Nile's parent company, Signet Jewelers, emphasized the brand's reputation and quality, but did not address the price difference. The couple, Ng and Chan, expressed their desire for more consistent pricing and encouraged consumers to do their research and ask questions to ensure they're getting a fair deal. As lab-grown diamonds continue to gain popularity, it's crucial for consumers to be aware of the potential price variations and take precautions when shopping for these stones.
