A nation is reeling, demanding answers. Following the devastating Bondi terror attack, which tragically claimed 15 lives, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to announce a national royal commission. This decision comes after weeks of mounting pressure to launch an inquiry into the horrific events, specifically targeting a Hanukkah event last month. But who will lead this crucial investigation? The answer, according to sources, is former High Court justice Virginia Bell.
The announcement is anticipated to be made in Canberra on Thursday afternoon. The pressure on the Prime Minister has been intense, especially given the tragic loss and the alleged ISIS-inspired nature of the attack.
And this is the part most people miss... The selection of Ms. Bell has not been without controversy. Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg has voiced concerns, claiming the Jewish community harbors reservations about her appointment. He stated on social media that it's 'unthinkable' the Prime Minister would choose a commissioner lacking the Jewish community's full confidence.
However, the ABC has spoken to various sources within prominent Jewish Australian community groups. While they broadly acknowledge Ms. Bell's legal expertise and lack of personal reasons for opposition, concerns linger regarding her perceived association with the political left.
Ms. Bell's background is extensive and varied. She began her career at the Redfern Legal Centre in the 1970s, notably defending individuals arrested during the first Mardi Gras parade. She later became a judge on the NSW Supreme Court in 1999. In 2009, she made history as the fourth woman to serve on the High Court bench, appointed by the Rudd government. She retired in 2021.
Interestingly, Ms. Bell has previously been entrusted by Mr. Albanese to lead a probe into Scott Morrison's secret ministry appointments. Her report, published later that year, found Mr. Morrison's actions to be 'corrosive' to government trust. She even hosted the ABC program Late Night Live in the early 90s.
But here's where it gets controversial... The government initially offered full support to a state-led royal commission announced by NSW Premier Chris Minns. They also tasked former Australian Security Intelligence Organisation boss Dennis Richardson to review federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
