On Saturday, the Canucks welcomed three new faces to the fold: forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, and defenseman Zeev Buium. These talented newcomers, acquired alongside a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, hit the ice with their new team for a practice session at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House.
Vancouver coach Adam Foote emphasized the importance of embracing the future, highlighting the reinforcements as a significant part of the team's evolution. The Canucks (11-17-3) currently find themselves at the bottom of the NHL standings, with a record of 2-7-0 in their last nine games. The trade rumors surrounding Hughes had been swirling all season, as the future of the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner with the Canucks remained uncertain. But now, with Hughes' departure, the focus shifts to the three newcomers and their impact on the team's future.
Rossi, a center, and Buium, a defenseman, were immediately integrated into the first power-play unit, while Ohgren took on fourth-line wing duties during a rigorous 40-minute practice session. Rossi also centered the top line during line rushes, alongside Jake DeBrusk and Brock Boeser, while Buium paired up with Tyler Myers on the second defensive pairing.
Buium, despite stepping into some of Hughes' roles, knows he has big shoes to fill. Hughes, with 23 points (2 goals, 21 assists) in 26 games this season and a remarkable 432 points (61 goals, 371 assists) in 459 regular-season games, leaves a significant legacy. Buium, at just 20 years old, was selected by Minnesota in the 2024 NHL Draft and has 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) in 31 games this season. He aims to carve his own path, inspired by Hughes' achievements but determined to write his own story.
"I want to be myself and contribute in my own unique way," Buium said. "Hughes is a superstar, a Norris Trophy winner, and an icon in the league. I've always admired his game, but I'm focused on becoming the best version of myself."
Rossi, currently on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, is expected to receive final medical clearance soon and could make his return against the New Jersey Devils. The 24-year-old, selected by Minnesota in the 2020 NHL Draft, is in his third full NHL season and has 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists) in 17 games. He's signed to a three-year, $15 million contract with the Wild.
Ohgren, 21, was selected by Minnesota in the 2022 NHL Draft and has yet to register a point in 18 games this season. He's experienced the shuffle between the Wild and their AHL affiliate over the past three seasons.
"It's been a challenging journey with the ups and downs," Ohgren shared. "But I believe this is the right place for me to thrive, and I'm excited to contribute to the team's success."
Saturday marked the first step towards cohesion for the players, both new and existing, in the wake of the blockbuster trade. Tyler Myers, a veteran on the team, expressed his enthusiasm for the new additions.
