Ebonyi State Government's Ambitious Recruitment Drive: A Step Towards Quality Healthcare
The Ebonyi State Government has announced an ambitious plan to recruit 2,000 qualified health workers, including medical doctors, nurses, and community health extension workers, as part of its efforts to revolutionize primary healthcare. This initiative is a testament to the government's commitment to ensuring that only qualified personnel deliver services to residents, revitalizing healthcare facilities, and providing modern, sustainable healthcare infrastructure.
Dr. Phillip Emeka Ovuoba, Executive Secretary of the Ebonyi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EBSPHCDA), revealed that the recruitment drive is a crucial step in addressing the state's healthcare challenges. With many health workers retiring, the government aims to fill the manpower gap while facilities undergo revitalization. Ovuoba assured that the state will soon begin employing more health workers, including medical doctors, to ensure uninterrupted services.
This recruitment is a part of Governor Francis Nwifuru's comprehensive plan to modernize healthcare infrastructure under the Primary Health Care Revitalisation Project. The project encompasses the construction of new hospital structures, staff quarters, perimeter fencing, and the provision of solar-powered electricity, water supply, and improved welfare for health personnel. Ovuoba praised Ebonyi's model for its depth and sustainability, transforming revitalized facilities into modern hospitals with all essential amenities.
To combat quackery, the government has activated anti-quackery task forces in collaboration with local councils and the Ministry of Health. These task forces identify and shut down illegal health facilities, especially in areas like Ohaukwu and Ezza North, where unqualified practitioners are prevalent. The Ebonyi State Government is also a part of the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMI), a federal program aimed at reducing maternal and perinatal mortality rates linked to quack practices.
Under MAMI, newly trained nurses, midwives, and community health workers will be deployed to rural communities to replace unqualified practitioners and improve access to safe, professional healthcare. Ovuoba emphasized that ending quackery requires providing qualified health workers and making government facilities functional. The government is enhancing health posts, increasing medicine supplies, and expanding coverage to reduce reliance on unlicensed providers.
Ovuoba appealed to community members to utilize government health centers rather than unauthorized clinics, highlighting the state's establishment of functional primary healthcare centers in all 171 political wards with support from the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF). He reaffirmed the state's commitment to achieving universal health coverage and bringing quality healthcare closer to rural dwellers, setting a new standard for community healthcare in Nigeria with the support of the governor and the First Lady's advocacy for free maternal and child health services.
