A shocking demand has been made by the Parramatta Eels in a potential swap deal for Zac Lomax, and it's causing quite a stir in the rugby league world! The Eels have set their sights on three key players from the Melbourne Storm, and they're not backing down.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Eels have identified Xavier Coates, Stefano Utoikamanu, and Jack Howarth as the players they want in exchange for Lomax. But here's where it gets controversial... all three of these players are off contract at the end of next season, which means they can start negotiating with other clubs as early as November 1st.
The Eels granted Lomax an early release from his contract, but with a catch. He can't play for another NRL team until 2029 unless Parramatta gives the green light. And this is the part most people miss... the Eels are now using this opportunity to their advantage, demanding an 'appropriate exchange of value' for Lomax's release.
Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos made it clear that Lomax won't be joining the Storm without a fair trade. "We agreed to certain terms with Zac, and he signed up for those protections. Now, he's exploring options within the NRL, and we won't consent to him joining another club unless it benefits us."
The Storm, however, are not giving up without a fight. They've offered some fringe players and even financial compensation, but the Eels are holding firm.
As Storm legend Cooper Cronk puts it, "Melbourne has a right to pursue Lomax, but ultimately, it's the Eels' decision. They hold all the power. Every club wants Zac, but it has to be beneficial for Parramatta."
And this is where the story gets even more intriguing. Cronk believes that the Eels are in a strong position and can demand top players in exchange. "If I'm the Eels, I'm saying no to a mid-tier player and cash. I want Xavier Coates!"
But Ennis, another NRL great, has a different take. He questions the Storm's interest in Lomax, asking, "Where will he fit in their lineup?"
This potential swap deal has sparked a heated debate among rugby league fans and experts. Who will the Eels go for? Will the Storm sweeten their offer? And what does this mean for the future of Lomax and these three key players?
Stay tuned, because this story is far from over, and the outcome could shape the league's landscape for years to come.
What do you think? Should the Eels hold out for their preferred players, or is it time to accept a deal that benefits the club in the short term? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
