A shocking development has hit the Detroit Lions, as their veteran center, Frank Ragnow, has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season due to a failed physical. This news comes as a blow to the team's offensive line, which was already dealing with multiple injuries.
The Lions' Center is Out for the Season
Ragnow, a four-time Pro Bowler, had attempted a comeback after retiring during the offseason. However, a Grade 3 hamstring strain, discovered by the team's medical staff, has put an end to his return. Head Coach Dan Campbell revealed that Ragnow himself brought the injury to the team's attention, leading to further evaluation and the disappointing news.
But here's where it gets controversial... Ragnow's initial retirement was partly due to the injuries he sustained throughout his career. With his comeback now thwarted by another injury, some may question whether he should have attempted a return at all.
The Lions' offensive line has been hit hard with injuries, including a broken leg for left guard Christian Mahogany, who is expected to be out until the new year. Center Graham Glasgow also missed the Thanksgiving game due to a knee injury. Ragnow's return was seen as a potential boost to the unit, as he has been one of the league's top centers for several years.
In his last five seasons, Ragnow's performance was exceptional, allowing only four sacks and earning a 90.0 grade from Pro Football Focus on multiple occasions. His presence would have provided a much-needed stability to the line, especially with the preferred options being limited due to injuries.
And this is the part most people miss... Ragnow's age of 29 suggests he might consider another comeback attempt in 2026. However, given his history of injuries, it's unclear whether he will choose to continue his career. His only full season was in 2020, and with another injury derailing his comeback, it may reinforce his initial decision to retire.
As for the Lions, they will now rely on Kayode Awosika, Trystan Colon, and Graham Glasgow to fill the left guard and center positions. Rookie Miles Frazier, who recently returned from the non-football injury list, could also be an option, primarily having played right guard in college but with experience at left guard as well.
The future of Frank Ragnow with the Lions remains uncertain, with Coach Campbell stating that no discussions have taken place yet.
