Fuel Finder Scheme: How to Save Money at the Pump | UK Petrol and Diesel Prices (2026)

For drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles, the prospect of spending more at the pump is becoming a reality, especially as many are overlooking potential savings from a newly introduced initiative by the Government.

Recent statistics reveal that a shocking 61% of motorists are completely unaware of the Fuel Finder scheme, which officially launched on February 2. This program requires fuel stations to update their prices and any fuel shortages within just half an hour of changes, providing drivers with the ability to locate the most affordable petrol and diesel options available in their vicinity.

The Government releases this pricing information in a spreadsheet format, which comparison sites like PetrolPrices skillfully transform into user-friendly maps and simplified data sets.

In fact, the data highlights that 47% of drivers have never even heard of the Fuel Finder scheme, while an additional 14% who are aware of it did not know it had commenced. Alarmingly, only 39% of respondents believe that this tool will lead to lower fuel prices, despite projections indicating potential price reductions ranging from one to six pence per litre.

Moreover, there are concerns regarding the effectiveness of these new changes: merely 19% of drivers reported being "very likely" to check fuel prices before visiting their local station. In contrast, over 40% expressed that they were unlikely to do so, and two-thirds stated they were "very unlikely" to compare prices at all.

Utilizing comparison tools can significantly benefit drivers, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds annually when refueling—particularly if they habitually fill up at the same station without exploring cheaper alternatives. Tom Jervis, a consumer reporter at Auto Express, pointed out that despite a recent decline in petrol and diesel prices, many drivers are focused on more than just monetary savings. He remarked, "Time and convenience still play a major role in how people choose where to fill up, which raises questions about how much the Fuel Finder scheme will change real-world behavior."

He further commented, "In theory, having access to live fuel pricing should spark competition among retailers, but unlike online shopping, opting for a cheaper fuel often requires a detour for relatively small savings."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
- Drivers might soon encounter speed limits of 70mph on key roads as critical projects gain approval.
- A prominent car manufacturer has admitted it made an error regarding its petrol and electric vehicle offerings, reflecting a significant change in strategy.
- Despite major trials for autonomous vehicles set to launch across London, British consumers remain hesitant about embracing driverless technology.

Interestingly, some Costco gas stations throughout the UK are currently offering petrol at significantly lower prices than other supermarkets and major retailers. Research indicates that numerous drivers are reluctant to switch from their preferred fueling spots unless they see considerable savings. One-third of drivers indicated they would need to save at least £3 per tank, while 28% stated the minimum savings should be around £5.

Steve Walker, head of digital content at Auto Express, emphasized the importance of the tool functioning smoothly to motivate motorists to seek out better fuel prices. The Government has expressed its intention to eventually make this price data accessible directly to drivers, including through satellite navigation systems. Notably, motorists in Northern Ireland are already benefiting from lower fuel prices compared to the rest of the UK.

According to the latest information from the Fuel Finder tool, Costco locations in Liverpool and Leeds appear to offer the lowest prices for E5 super unleaded fuel in the country. For instance, the Costco located on Waterloo Road in Liverpool is selling E5 for only £1.10, while the outlet in Hunslet, Leeds, lists premium petrol at £1.17.

In contrast, many fuel stations in Northern Ireland are pricing their fuel at under 121p per litre, with towns like Dungannon, Craigavon, Belfast, Newry, Derry, Glengormley, and Lisburn leading the way.

However, it's essential to note that there are still discrepancies in the data provided by the Fuel Finder scheme, including instances where stations report fuel prices that are either a few pence off or shockingly high, reaching as much as £15 per litre.
