Harlequins in Crisis? Squad Overhaul Planned After Shocking Season! (2026)

Harlequins are facing a critical crossroads, with underperforming players on notice as the club plans significant squad cuts. The message is clear: perform or prepare for a future elsewhere.

Following a dismal season marked by the departure of head coach Danny Wilson in September and a string of disappointing results—only four wins from 15 matches across all competitions—the club is taking decisive action. A statement, endorsed by Harlequins' leadership after a crushing 66-21 defeat by Northampton, underscored the unacceptable nature of recent performances.

With a Champions Cup match against the formidable South African side Stormers looming—a team undefeated this season—the pressure is mounting. Jason Gilmore, the Harlequins coach, has made it clear that the squad's future hinges on their performance.

"The fact of the matter is, we do have a lot of players on contract," Gilmore stated. "We're looking at the spend that we put into the squad to make sure that we're getting most bang for our buck. And the boys are aware of that."

But here's where it gets controversial... The club is scrutinizing its spending and contract allocations to maximize efficiency. This strategic shift involves determining the ideal number of contracts and where to allocate resources effectively.

Harlequins recently secured Chandler Cunningham-South with a new contract in November, fending off competition from Sale. Additionally, George Furbank is expected to join the team, and James Dun has been confirmed as a new arrival for the 2026-27 season. However, with former captain Stephen Lewies potentially returning to South Africa, Gilmore suggests that other departures might be necessary to streamline the squad, emphasizing the need for a balance of quality and flexibility.

"You obviously need the right amount of contracts across all positions so that if you do get injuries, it's not like you're scrambling," Gilmore explained. "But what we're looking at is, can we be more efficient with our contracting?"

And this is the part most people miss... Harlequins have seen several high-profile players depart in recent seasons, including Joe Marler, Danny Care, and Matt Symons, alongside Andre Esterhuizen, Will Collier, Wilco Louw, and Joe Marchant. Gilmore is now focused on revitalizing Harlequins' attacking style while emphasizing the importance of physicality in defense.

"How much are we prepared to fight?" Gilmore questioned. "It's just not about being on the back foot, it's about arresting momentum in the game and making sure that we keep on top."

Jack Kenningham, a flanker who came through the club's academy, expresses his deep connection to Harlequins.

"I put my body on the line every time I play for Quins - I love the club," said the 26-year-old. "It means a lot to me, having been a season-ticket holder when I was about 11 years old. So it hurts me probably, potentially more than others when we do lose."

Kenningham draws inspiration from the recent turnarounds of Bath and Exeter, who have risen from the bottom of the league to become strong contenders.

"You don't have to go that far back to see where they were in the league to what they're doing now and the way they're performing," Kenningham added. "Everybody knows that this is a professional sport. Things do change and they can change very quickly."
