Imagine the thrill of achieving a lifelong dream, only to have your twin sister match your success! That's the remarkable story of Chisato and Akie Iwai, the history-making Japanese golf twins who are taking the LPGA Tour by storm.
In their debut season, the sisters have already etched their names in the record books. Chisato claimed her first LPGA title at the Riviera Maya Open in Mexico back in May. But just three months later, Akie, the slightly older twin, stole the spotlight with a victory in Portland. This incredible feat makes them the first twins ever to win on the LPGA Tour!
"I didn't think I would win on the Tour this year," Akie confessed, reflecting on her incredible journey at the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur. "But my sister won first and her victory inspired me. I did my best and felt the power in me to win. This is a special year for the both of us."
Chisato shared her sister's sentiments, emphasizing the powerful bond that fuels their success: "We inspire each other a lot, so it's a special feeling for both of us to win."
The LPGA Tour has seen sibling rivalries before, with the Sorenstam sisters, the Jutanugarn sisters, and the Korda sisters, who have a combined 21 tour titles. But the Iwais bring a unique dynamic to the game.
While they share a bond, the twins have distinct personalities. Akie is known for her quiet demeanor and preference for baseball caps, while Chisato is more outgoing and favors visors. Their playing styles also differ: Chisato excels at putting, while Akie is known for her powerful drives.
But here's where it gets interesting... They keep their conversations off the course about life. "We do not talk about golf. Just about life in general," Chisato revealed.
At the Maybank Championship, Akie was in 7th place going into the final round, while Chisato was tied for 28th. Akie, enjoying the course atmosphere, aimed to have fun after shooting her best round of 66 on Saturday. "The results do not matter, I just want to smile and have fun," she said.
