In a surprising twist, the job market defies expectations with a unique trend! While most sectors experienced a downturn in job postings, the HR and recruitment fields saw a slight increase in job ads towards the end of 2025.
According to SEEK's Employment Report, HR and recruitment job advertisements rose by 0.2% in December, a small but significant contrast to the overall 1.2% monthly decrease in job ads. This increase becomes even more intriguing when considering the annual comparison, as job ads were down 3.5% year-on-year.
But here's where it gets interesting: HR and recruitment weren't alone in this trend. The sports and recreation, and consulting and strategy sectors also showed a slight increase in job ads, bucking the broader market trend.
Blair Chapman, SEEK senior economist, noted the usual slowdown in hiring during the festive season, but the 2025 decline was more significant than past years. The legal industry took the biggest hit with a 3.4% drop in job postings, followed by retail and consumer products, and insurance.
And this is the part most people miss: the decline in hiring isn't solely due to employer caution. SEEK data reveals a 0.3% drop in applications per job ad in November, indicating a decrease in candidate activity. This trend, though small, suggests a shift in the job market dynamics.
However, the quarterly data offers a glimmer of hope, with job ads increasing in certain regions like the Northern Territory, Tasmania, and South Australia.
