But here’s where it gets truly intriguing—Oscar Piastri has openly dismissed any notion that his pursuit of the upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is influenced by a desire for justice on behalf of his manager, Mark Webber. Piastri characterizes drivers as "selfish beings," highlighting the intense personal focus that fuels their competitive drive.
Standing on the periphery of the championship race, Piastri currently ranks third in the standings, trailing his McLaren teammate Lando Norris by 16 points. His chance to become the first Australian World Champion since Alan Jones achieved that feat back in 1980 hinges on an unlikely combination of finishing either first or second while Norris and Max Verstappen encounter setbacks.
History, however, shows that surprises are possible. The last two seasons' title decisions featuring more than two contenders have seen the driver in third place claiming the championship—examples include Kimi Räikkönen in 2007, who won the title after entering the final race third overall, and Sébastien Vettel in 2010, who achieved similar success. Notably, the 2010 fierce contest involved four drivers, one of whom was Mark Webber, Piastri’s current manager.
Despite Webber’s personal history with a dramatic title fight, Piastri emphasizes that his motivation remains purely personal: "No. I think for me, I’m trying to do it for myself. Ultimately, as racing drivers, we’re pretty selfish people most of the time. And ultimately, we’re the only ones in the car, doing it for our own personal pride." He acknowledges the support of family, friends, and mentors but insists that his primary driver is personal ambition.
As for Webber’s potential hopes to see Piastri succeed, the young driver is clear: "I’m sure Mark would love to see me win, obviously. But yeah, there are no kinds of thoughts about paying that back or anything like that."
