Could a former San Diego Padres trade acquisition be heading to a National League playoff contender? That's the question swirling around Ryan O'Hearn, who joined the Padres at the trade deadline. The expectation was that he'd be a valuable asset in San Diego. But did he live up to those expectations?
In his 50 games with the Padres, O'Hearn maintained a 105 OPS+. While he didn't quite replicate his first-half success with the Baltimore Orioles, where he had 28 extra-base hits, his overall performance was still solid. He was even an All-Star in 2025! This raises an interesting point: will a team be willing to pay the now 32-year-old to be a regular starter?
Will Laws of Sports Illustrated suggests the Cincinnati Reds could be a potential landing spot for the veteran.
"A feel-good breakout hitter in his age-31 season, O’Hearn absolutely raked for the Orioles in the first half before returning to his career norm upon being traded to the Padres—that is, a slightly above-average hitter at first base. There’s a good chance 2025 will be the only year he ever makes it to the All-Star Game, and a true World Series contender will likely want more from his position. But the lefty’s bat-to-ball skill and commendable defense at least gives him a high production floor,” he wrote.
O'Hearn's potential with the Reds is intriguing, especially considering the hitter-friendly environment of Great American Ball Park.
He has some power, but not a ton. However, if he played in Great American Ball Park for a whole year, it wouldn't be too surprising to see him hit 25 homers.
