Get ready, sports fans! The 2025 Southeast Asian Games are just around the corner, and the track and field events are shaping up to be electrifying! The men's and women's 100m races, often considered the 'blue-riband' events, will kick off the athletics action on Thursday, December 11th in Bangkok, Thailand. This is the opening day of the event.
The men's race is already generating buzz, with two names at the forefront: Thailand's Puripol Boonson and Indonesia's Lalu Muhammad Zohri. These two sprinters are the fastest in the region this year.
Boonson, who is only 19 years old, holds the Thai record with an impressive 10.06 seconds, achieved in 2023. He also boasts the fastest time in Southeast Asia this year, clocking in at 10.15 seconds.
With Malaysia's Muhd Azeem Fahmi, the second-fastest man in the region, absent from the games, Zohri emerges as a strong contender. The 25-year-old Indonesian has a personal best of 10.03 seconds, set in 2019, though his fastest race this year was 10.21 seconds.
Keep an eye on Singapore's Marc Brian Louis (10.31 seconds) and Malaysia's Jonathan Nyepa (10.40 seconds), who are also expected to make a mark in the field of 14 runners.
In the women's race, Veronica Shanti Pereira of Singapore is the clear favorite. She's fresh off winning a silver medal at both the 2023 Asian Championships and Asian Games. She'll be competing in the same stadium where she secured her continental title and set her personal best and Singaporean national record of 11.20 seconds.
Her season's best of 11.40 seconds puts her well ahead of her rivals, including the Philippines' Zion Corrales-Nelson (11.52 seconds). Kristina Marie Knott (11.56 seconds), also from the Philippines, is another athlete to watch.
But here's where it gets interesting... How do you plan to watch the games? Are you excited to see these athletes compete? Who do you think will take home the gold? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
