This came a month after 13 charter-holding teams signed an extension offer from NASCAR, which some felt they had to accept to avoid the potential discontinuation of the charter system. Front Row and 23XI were the only teams that refused to sign, leading to a public back-and-forth between the teams and the league.
The high stakes of the trial were emphasized by Judge Kenneth D. Bell, who warned of disastrous consequences if either side prevailed. The outcome could have forced NASCAR to sell its racetracks or the France family to cede control of the sport. The settlement comes after a two-day settlement conference, where high-ranking NASCAR executives and team ownership participated.
