Sweden's Nuclear Renaissance: Fourth Application for State Support at Barsebäck (2026)

The Swedish government is gearing up for a potential nuclear energy renaissance, with a flurry of applications for state support for new nuclear power projects. This comes as a response to the country's need for stable electricity production and the centre-right coalition government's positive stance on nuclear energy, outlined in a roadmap unveiled in November 2023. The project, involving two ABB-designed boiling water reactors (BWRs), is estimated to generate 2,500 MW of power. This application is a key step in the decision-making process, with negotiations between the government and the company on the terms and scope of the support, as well as ongoing dialogue with the European Commission to ensure compliance with EU state aid rules.

The interest in investing in new nuclear power is not limited to Barsebäck. Kävlinge Municipality and Nordic Nuclear Energy (NNE) have signed a joint letter of intent to potentially establish a boiling water reactor in the area, taking advantage of an existing local development plan that allows for additional nuclear power production. NNE's primary focus is on the BWR-N, an evolutionary Nordic boiling water reactor designed for large-scale, fossil-free baseload power, built on the success of the Forsmark 3 and Oskarshamn 3 reactors. The company aims to develop BWR-N as a series-built reactor platform, targeting four reactors in Sweden and Finland, reflecting the economic benefits of series deployment.

In parallel, NNE is also developing micro-modular reactor solutions for local and industrial applications, offering smaller, flexible, and dispatchable energy production. This dual approach demonstrates the company's commitment to meeting diverse energy needs while contributing to Sweden's transition to a fossil-free future. The applications from various companies, including Videberg Kraft AB, Blykalla, and Studsvik, showcase a growing interest in nuclear power and a desire to tap into the potential of this reliable and low-carbon energy source.

However, the road to a nuclear energy renaissance in Sweden is not without challenges. The country must navigate the complexities of state aid regulations, engage in negotiations with companies, and ensure public acceptance. The early shutdown of reactors due to political pressure from Denmark serves as a reminder of the potential obstacles. Nonetheless, the applications and ongoing discussions indicate a positive trajectory for nuclear power in Sweden, with the potential to meet the country's energy needs while contributing to a sustainable and low-carbon future.
