Aziaha James, a rising star, is stepping into the spotlight as the Phantom Club battles through a series of injuries. With Satou Sabally still out due to a concussion, Dana Evans nursing a lower extremity injury, and Tiffany Hayes questionable with a similar issue, the team is down to just four fully healthy players. This is where James steps in, ready to make her Unrivaled debut on Monday night.
The Phantom, led by head coach Roneeka Hodges, an assistant with the Connecticut Sun, have had a mixed start to the season, with a record of 1-1. But they've got some serious talent on their roster, including Kelsey Plum, who's been averaging an impressive 25 points and 7.5 assists per game, Natasha Cloud with 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, and Aliyah Boston, who's putting up 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Don't forget Kiki Iriafen, who's contributing 10.5 points and 6 rebounds.
And now, enter Aziaha James. She's the first Unrivaled development player to be called up, and her story is one of determination and skill. James, who was drafted 12th overall by the Dallas Wings in 2025, had a stellar rookie season. In just 17.7 minutes per game, she averaged 7.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists, building on her strong collegiate career at NC State.
But here's where it gets controversial... James is one of seven Unrivaled players not officially on a roster. Instead, they're part of the league's development program, a unique setup that allows these players to gain experience and develop their skills. The other development pool players include Hailey Van Lith (Chicago Sky), Haley Jones (Dallas Wings), Emily Engstler (Washington Mystics), Laeticia Amihere (Golden State Valkyries), Makayla Timpson (Indiana Fever), and former WNBA player Kiana Williams. It's an innovative approach, but does it give these players a fair chance to shine?
And this is the part most people miss... James and the Phantom will face a tough challenge against the Mist, led by a star-studded lineup including Breanna Stewart, Arike Ogunbowale, Alanna Smith, Allisha Gray, Veronica Burton, and Li Yueru.
